Stars to honor Huntsville High Baseball and Girls Volleyball

Thanks to Huntsville High athletics, Huntsville is home to two more state championships.

The Panthers’ girls volleyball team won the 6A State Championship back in November. The Huntsville High baseball team followed suit and won the 6A State Championship in Montgomery in May.

Led by Coach Melanie Donahoo, the Lady Panthers’ volleyball team finished the season 48-5. Standout Jessica Lewis was named The Huntsville Times Elite Volleyball Player of the Year. She was also the teams’ MVP and an All-Area for the past two seasons. Huntsville has won eight state championships in the past nine years. This is their fifth 6A title.

The Panthers’ baseball team swept the state championship in Montgomery in May. Coach Mark Mincher, son of Southern League President Don Mincher, and the Panthers went 34-8 on the season. The state champs are ranked 25th in the nation.

Both teams will be acknowledged on-field before the start of the game tonight.

World Elder abuse awareness day June 15th

World Elder abuse awareness day June 15th

Each year hundreds of thousands of older Americans are abused, neglected, and exploited. Elders lose an estimated $2.6 billion or more annually due to elder financial abuse and exploitation, funds that could have been used to pay for basic needs such as housing, food, and medical care. In addition, elder abuse is estimated to cost Americans $60 to $90 billion annually in health care, social services, and investigative and legal costs. No one is immune to abuse, neglect and exploitation. It occurs in every demographic group and can happen to anyone; a family member, neighbor, and even you. However, on June 15, 2011, "World Elder Abuse Awareness Day", the entire world will focus on this crime which often goes undiscovered and unreported, and draw attention to the mistreatment of the elderly.
