Computer error cost Huntsville Utilities $37.6 million

Huntsville Utilities' Electric Division will remit to TVA, its sole power supplier, a one-time payment of $37.6 million from reserves to correct an underpayment.

A utilities spokesperson said the underpayment was created by a computer programming error. Originally made in 2003, the error was discovered in late February after TVA changed its method of billing for the power it supplies to Huntsville Utilities' customers.

Although Huntsville Utilities had billed all customers correctly throughout the seven-year period, the computer program miscalculated by 1.6 percent the correct amount due to TVA – an error that seven external audits and five special TVA audits did not turn up.
