Cheers for Craft Beer: Rocket Republic is Coming Soon

Cheers for Craft Beer: Rocket Republic is Coming Soon

Did you know that Madison County has several breweries in the works?  We have so many talented people in our area, it’s no wonder Madison County is growing by leaps and bounds with craft beer breweries.

What I find so wonderful about the craft beer market is the camaraderie between breweries.  While they compete on the shelves, they have a common goal to educate people about craft beer and to help each other succeed. It’s very Musketeer-ish (all for one, one for all).

WEATHER BLOG: Finally warming up

WEATHER BLOG: Finally warming up

By Jeff Castle

It hasn't felt at all like May in the last few days and it's in fact been a record setting stretch of cool weather.  Some of you may have even had to turn the heat back on for a little bit (I toughed it out, even though it got as cool as 63 in the house!).

Ceremony held for Madison Co. drug court graduates

A ceremony for those graduates was at the Madison County Courthouse.

MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- More than a dozen Madison County drug offenders are moving forward after a special ceremony for completing the county's drug court.

A ceremony for those graduates was at the Madison County Courthouse.

All graduates are non-violent offenders.

They had to complete three phases of the program, which lasts a total of 32 weeks.

During each phase, the participants had to undergo random drug testing and be required to seek treatment for their addiction.

"This program is designed to assist individuals that have been pulled out and determined that they may be someone that can be helped, and if they can be, you can go through the program. That is difficult because it means one: getting off the drug, two: realizing what caused you to use it, and three: learn how to deal with those factors," said Madison County District Judge Claude Hundley.

Redstone Report: Black Hawk delivered to Sweden

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF)- 14 Black Hawk helicopters have been sent to Sweden. The 15th one was sent in late April, wrapping up the foreign military sales mission.

The Black Hawk is a very diverse aircraft that will fit the Swedish military's needs. Raymond Hayes, the Program Director for International Programs for the Utility Helicopter Project Office, describes the aircraft's capabilities.

"You can do air assaults, you can do MEDEVAC, search and rescue, you can do cargo and you can do sling loads."

In July of 2010, the country sent in a letter of request to buy the helicopters. After that, the Aviation and Missile Command developed the case and in January 2011, a contract was signed. Less than a year later, the first Black Hawk was delivered.

Hayes describes the quick turnaround, "Normally, our times are 18-36 months. We've been able to do this in a year to 18 months."

Cheers for Craft Beer: Rocket City Brewfest Preveiw

It's that time again when you and your taste buds can enjoy craft beer with the Rocket City Brewfest on May 10th - 11th.

I had a chance to sit down and talk with Carrie Partain with Free the Hops who makes this event bigger and better each year! She gave me an inside scoop on what is happening in the craft beer world and what is new for 2013.

First off, if you have not visited the RCBF website, check it out!  It's new and fancy!

Also new is an experience where you get a two night stay in a downtown Huntsville Hotel. Plus you get shuttled around like a boss in a limo with tickets to both the Friday and the Saturday sessions. You can learn more by clicking here.

Arsenal chemical weapons cleanup will take 25 years

A massive cleanup operation will soon begin on the arsenal to remove buried chemical weapons.

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF)- Chemical weapons buried improperly on Redstone Arsenal have sparked an investigation and massive cleanup effort.

An arsenal spokesperson confirmed there are 17 chemical warfare burial sites on the arsenal. Those sites date back to the end of WWII. The weapons need to be dug up and disposed of properly.

Spokesperson Terri Stover with Public Affairs said the improper disposal was no one's fault. The methods used on the arsenal were standard for the time. She said it wasn't until years later, environmentalists realized there were safer methods of disposal.

Redstone Arsenal has been working with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management and the Environmental Protection Agency for the past two years to plan a large-scale cleanup effort. However, the investigation was just announced.
