HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF)- One of the last men to step onto the moon took part in a celebration in Huntsville on Tuesday night.

Dr. Jack Schmitt visited the U.S. Space and Rocket Center as part of the 40th anniversary of Apollo 17 celebration.

He spoke under the Saturn V rocket - the vehicle that took him to the moon.

Schmitt said this event is important because it brings a community together that was involved in the Apollo 17 program.

"The Saturn V Rocket that's hanging over our head here was really the fundamentally and enabling technology that allowed us to meet President Eisenhower and President Kennedy's goal of getting to the moon," said Schmitt.

Earlier Tuesday, Mayor Tommy Battle proclaimed it Apollo 17 Day in honor of the final lunar landing.
