Fall for the Arts this October

Fall for the Arts this October

More than 30 local arts and cultural organizations are coming together to make you "Fall for the Arts" this October.

It's part of a nation-wide celebration of Arts and Humanities month. Art classes, festivals, performances and exhibits are among the 350 events planned for October alone around Huntsville.

"The sheer number and range of arts, cultural, and entertainment events in October is evidence that there is always something to do in Huntsville and the surrounding region." said Allison Dillon-Jauken, the Executive Director of the Arts Council. "While October is National Arts and Humanities month, very few of the community's October arts and cultural events were scheduled specifically because of 'Fall for the Arts'.

Students awarded at State Capitol for art projects

Students awarded at State Capitol for art projects

On April 27, ninety-six students across Alabama will be awarded for their creativity as visual artists at the State Capitol.

Their work traveled to Montgomery to be exhibited at the Alabama Artists Gallery, from April 1-27, and every student who placed in the state exhibition will receive a Blue Ribbon Award. Awards will also be given for Best of District, Best of each category, and Best of Show.

This year’s Best of Show will go to Ashley Irelan for her Self Portrait. Ashley is a 10th grader, studying with Kimberly Huffstetler at Grissom High School in Huntsville.

In addition to exhibitions, the program involves a portfolio competition for senior students. The portfolios are adjudicated by professional artists and professors from the art departments of partnering institutions.

Tailgate with a touch of style

Tailgate with a touch of style

Are you an Alabama fan with a passion for football and fashion?  If you like to tailgate with something besides a clunky cooler, a Huntsville woman and her newly formed company may have just what you are looking for.

Haul Couture is Kim Whitaker's creation.  In 2009, this interior designer had an over-sized plastic bag that she hauled everything in, from lamp bases to fabric swatches around.

One weekend she used backing sheets to stack levels in the bag to take a meal to a family member.  She had a "light bulb" moment and decided the bad could be a viable product if it were pretty.

Connecting to a Guatemalan factory through a friend, the first round of bags were produced in November, 2009 and were shown at Randolph Academy's "Under the Christmas Tree" Market here in Huntsville.

Q: I want to throw a Halloween party this year, but not the same old fake spider webs and "bloody" red punch. How can I make my party stand out?

A: First, bring on the costumes! You need people to dress up; otherwise, it's just another lame gathering at your place. How to do this depends on your friends. Are they competitive? Have a costume contest. Do they need a little guidance?

CUPERTINO, Calif. (AP) - Apple Inc. unveiled a new iPhone on Tuesday that is faster and more powerful but stops short of a more radical upgrade. It said Sprint customers will now be able to use one.

The new iPhone 4S has an improved camera with a higher-resolution sensor. The processor is faster, which helps run smoother, more realistic action games.
